Saying Hello. Part #1

Thank author of this post/commentNext time and every time you go to the store, any store. Start watching. Watch the people waiting in line to pay. Are they impatient and anxious? What about the cashier? Have they taken on the same attitude? And, you?

Now in my observations most cashier "greet" you with a "hello". In most cases it seems not to be a "greeting" but rather a "job requirement"! What happens? The customers also seem to reply with a "hello", and one that doesn't cut through any of the impatience or anxiousness. Not a real greeting, but a superficial "hello" so as to not appear impolite.

In fact it could hardly be called communication or a greeting as neither side has any desire to communicate.

Now try this, every time you go shopping. At every store. Try to respond with your "hello" as you are greeting a friend, not out of politeness. Then follow it up with a "how are you?". Again, as you are meeting an old friend after not seeing them for many years.

Just maybe there will be a smile or at the very least you'll break through just a bit of their job boredom and mirroring of the customers bad attitudes.

In an exceptional case you can get the cashier an the whole line talking. At that moment the impatience and anxiously is gone and it didn't cost a penny!

Mostly what I have observed when I had been to Store especially when its weekends; people running about to an empty cashier to pay for his/her groceries, they even go for a full time competition even if its an elderly person over 70 years of age.

Thank author of this post/comment"Exactly!"

Yes it seems that way and so much stress from it! Why not pick the cashier with the longest line and take the time to relax and chill out a bit?

As a customer, I sometimes get tired of waiting and standing in line. When I buy some groceries and fall in line, I usually look for a shorter line of customers so I can get to the cashier immediately, simply because I want to go home right away.

I appreciate friendly customers though it is a job requirement for them to wear a smile. So I feel like they have a good customer service.

I also feel that greeting customers is more of a chore or a job requirement for cashiers and sales people in malls and department stores. They say hello or good morning but they're not even looking a you. They are looking at the wall behind you. They won't even make eye to eye contact. I don't greet them back if I don't feel the sincerity in their greeting.

Courtesy is part of their job as a service-oriented company. The least they can do is give a sincere greeting.

This is a nice tip especially for clerks and various businesses; the said can also be applied for customers.

Some times (or most of it), customers are just too irritated to even greet with a smile. Just imagine waiting in a long line which seems to go on forever and then at the end you end up seeing a superficial smile? If that doesn't irritates you then what will? I say if a clerk can't bring out a nice friendly smile then at least be casual towards the customer, or do them a great favor by doing the work fast and efficient.

I agree with you Frances. There are really customer service representatives who aren't friendly at all. Yes, they just greet the customers because it is more of a task than they are willing to do. I hope that this is something to be taken cared of by managers and store owners. Customers would prefer sales personnels who are more sincere and more approachable.

I also hope that customers will treat these people nicely, too. Thank you and have a great day!

In every kind of job it is really important that an employee has a pleasing personality to at least give a warm welcome to the clients or customers coming over. I am also a customer and I am more convinced to avail your business if I see that you are courteous enough in treating me as a customer. Finally, it is really different if a company train friendly approach from their employees.

Hi there!

It's really alarming to hear that respomd to some people who are very observant in our society.. I use to go in this not that popular shop in town and the sales lady and guard usually says, "hello" or even"good day" to every body , and I agree, they just do it for some jobs sake.. Alarming..

Thank you so much and have a great day to all of you guys!

It's important that people are being observant to the things happening in his surroundings. I must agree that greetings from those sale ladies and guards are part of their job requirement. But I also admire them for being patient to greet all their customers for a day. Of course, it's not that easy to smile every time you see customers. As buyers, I think we can also help them by smiling and saying our "hi" and "hello". In this way, they will feel happy to see people that are happy with their service.

Hi there!

I really don't like that company that I frequently call makes me wait. It really makes my head really hot. I really want to send this problem to the people that are involve in this problem. Hope it will help a lot.

Thanks you so much to all of you guys and have a great day to all!

Hi there!

I am really an inpatient individual and I admit that, it really makes my temper high when I got to pay the cashier from a long line of people. It does not only occur in the store but in other places as well and it is not really good to have that kind of attitude.

Thanks you so much to all of you guys and have a great day to all!

Hi there!

Well, they say, patient is a virtue and I do believe that if you are falling in line you should always control your temper and be patient because its a fair job, you are not only the one that is falling in line but the others as well, be optimistic some times.

Thanks you so much to all of you guys and have a great day to all!

Interesting suggestion. While were at it, let's go beyond the old friend metaphor and treat random store clerks like people you used to be romantically involved with. This could come complete with all the awkwardness of bumping into one of these ex lovers and in the first few seconds when you realise it's them, hope that they're life is worse then yours.

When I buy some groceries and fall in line, I am looking for a shorter line, so that I can go home earlier. Sometimes, the cashier is quite slow and I get tired of waiting and standing in line. Sometimes, I get mad but I realized that, it is not easy to become a cashier. Their job is to serve us, standing all day until the end of their work, so we all have to be more considerate.
